The test

About the Academic Writing test

The Academic Writing test takes 60 minutes and has two tasks. You must complete both, and you should write in a formal, academic style.

Task 1

Describe visual information

At least 150 words · about 20 minutes

You are given a graph, table, chart or diagram. You describe and summarise the information in your own words. This might mean describing data, the stages of a process, how something works, or an object or event.

Task 2

Write an essay

At least 250 words · about 40 minutes

You respond to a point of view, an argument or a problem. Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1, so make sure you leave enough time for it.

Scoring

How your Writing is marked

The examiner gives each task a band score from 1 to 9 for four criteria. Learning what each criterion rewards is one of the fastest ways to improve your score.

Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2)How fully and accurately you answer the question. In Task 1 this includes a clear overview of the main features.
Coherence and CohesionHow logically you organise your ideas, and how well you link sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical ResourceThe range, accuracy and appropriacy of your vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and AccuracyThe variety of sentence structures you use, and how accurately you use them.

General Training students: Task 2 is similar in both tests, but General Training Task 1 is a letter, not a description of visual information. These courses focus on the Academic test.
