Speaking Overview

In a nutshell, the IELTS speaking exam is designed to test your English fluency. It isn’t an IQ test, or a test designed to separate lower class individuals from upper class academics. With this in mind, try and throw away all of the “expert” advice when it comes to cramming in idioms out of context, and using four syllable words to explain simple ideas. Instead try speaking more like a native speaker, someone you would see on an American sitcom. That is how my students get 7, 7.5 and even 8.5 on their speaking exams.

Academic Writing Overview

The academic writing exam is designed to see if you can write in and academic format and describe data sets that you might encounter in university. As long as your grammar and vocabulary are decent, there are only a few steps to master and you will be writing Band 7+ essays.

IELTS General Training Writing Overview

The IELTS general training writing exam is designed to see if you can write English in the context of everyday life, it asks you to write a letter and also give your opinion on a specific topic. As long as you have a relatively good grasp of English, there are only a few things you should know before being able to get a 7 or above in this exam.
