Lexical Resource
This criterion assesses the test taker’s vocabulary range.
- Vocabulary breadth: The variety of words the test taker uses to express themselves.
- Vocabulary choice: The appropriateness and accuracy of the words selected to convey meaning.
- Circumlocution: The ability to effectively express ideas when encountering vocabulary gaps by using alternative words or phrases.
Essentially, this criterion examines how effectively the test taker can use a wide range of vocabulary to communicate their ideas clearly and accurately.
Key Things to Focus On When Trying To Improve Lexical Resource
1. Vocabulary Range and Topic Discussion:
- Broad vocabulary: Enables in-depth discussion of a variety of topics.
- Limited vocabulary: Leads to reliance on basic words, repetition, and difficulty discussing unfamiliar topics.
Performance Levels:
- Bands 5 and below: May experience difficulty with unfamiliar topics due to limited vocabulary.
- Higher Bands: Demonstrate sustained use of appropriate vocabulary, even when discussing abstract topics in Part 3.
Essentially, a strong vocabulary is crucial for effective communication, especially when discussing complex or unfamiliar topics. A limited vocabulary can restrict the depth and sophistication of a speaker’s responses.
2. Appropriacy of Vocabulary Use:
- Higher Bands (e.g., Band 8): Demonstrate precise word choices to convey nuanced meanings. For example, using “therapeutic” to describe shopping.
- Lower Bands: May use basic vocabulary and struggle to express nuanced meanings. For example, repeating “nice” to describe Vietnamese food.
Essentially, this criterion assesses how effectively the speaker uses vocabulary that is not only accurate but also appropriate and precise for the specific context and meaning they wish to convey.
3. Use of Less Common and Idiomatic Vocabulary:
- Band 7 and above: Demonstrates some use of less common vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs. Shows awareness of appropriate word combinations (collocations).
- Bands 8 and 9: Skillful and flexible use of less common vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs.
- Band 6: May use one or two idioms or phrasal verbs, but not consistently throughout the test.
Important Note: Inappropriately used vocabulary or errors in word choice will negatively impact the assessment of this criterion. Some teachers teach students to stuff idioms into their speech, this can have a negative impact if the idiom is used in an inappropriate way.
Essentially, this criterion evaluates the speaker’s ability to go beyond basic vocabulary and effectively incorporate less common words, idioms, and phrasal verbs to enhance their communication.
4. Paraphrasing:
- Circumlocution: The ability to express an idea using alternative words or phrases when the exact word cannot be recalled.
- Flexibility: Demonstrates the ability to access and utilize a wider range of vocabulary resources.
Performance Levels:
- Bands 4-8: Refer to the ability to paraphrase to overcome vocabulary gaps.
Essentially, paraphrasing is a valuable skill that allows speakers to maintain fluency and convey their intended meaning even when encountering vocabulary challenges. It demonstrates flexibility in language use and resourcefulness in communication.
