Speaking Band Descriptors

The IELTS Speaking band descriptors are a set of criteria that IELTS examiners use to assess your speaking performance. There are four bands, from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest band.

The four bands are:

  • Band 1: The candidate has very limited ability to communicate in English.
  • Band 2: The candidate can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics.
  • Band 3: The candidate can communicate in a range of routine and some less familiar topics, although with some circumlocution and occasional hesitation.
  • Band 4: The candidate can communicate effectively and fluently in a wide range of situations, even those that are somewhat challenging.
  • Band 5: The candidate can communicate effectively and fluently in all situations likely to be encountered in an English-speaking environment.
  • Band 6: The candidate can communicate effectively and fluently in all situations likely to be encountered in an English-speaking environment, with a very high degree of accuracy and fluency.
  • Band 7: The candidate’s command of English is virtually indistinguishable from that of a native speaker.
  • Band 8: The candidate’s command of English is exceptionally fluent and accurate.
  • Band 9: The candidate’s command of English is exceptional.

The IELTS Speaking band descriptors are divided into four areas:

  • Fluency and coherence: This refers to how well you can express your ideas in a clear and organized way.
  • Lexical resource: This refers to the range and accuracy of your vocabulary.
  • Grammatical range and accuracy: This refers to the range and accuracy of your grammar.
  • Pronunciation: This refers to the clarity and accuracy of your pronunciation.

Each of these areas is assessed on a scale of 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest band. Your overall band score is calculated by averaging your scores in each of the four areas.

Here are some examples of how you can improve your speaking performance in each of the four areas:

  • Fluency and coherence: To improve your fluency, you can practice speaking English regularly, even if it is just to yourself. You can also try to find a speaking partner or join a conversation group. To improve your coherence, you can try to organize your thoughts before you start speaking and to use linking words and phrases to connect your ideas.
  • Lexical resource: To improve your lexical resource, you can read widely and try to learn new words. You can also use a dictionary or thesaurus to find synonyms for words that you already know.
  • Grammatical range and accuracy: To improve your grammatical range and accuracy, you can study grammar rules and practice using different grammatical structures. You can also get feedback on your grammar from a teacher, tutor, or friend.
  • Pronunciation: To improve your pronunciation, you can listen to native speakers and try to imitate their pronunciation. You can also practice speaking English in front of a mirror or with a recording device.

By following these tips, you can improve your speaking performance and achieve a higher band score in the IELTS Speaking exam.
