Writing Part 2

 

In the second part of the IELTS Writing exam you will be asked to write formal essay that will be used to assess your ability to express and develop an argument in response to a given topic. 

The essay should be in a formal style, at least 250 words in length and you should aim to complete it in under 40 minutes.

You will be assessed on four areas:

  • Task Response: How well you have responded to the specific task requirements.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: How well you have organized your ideas and used linking devices to create a smooth flow of text.
  • Lexical Resource: The range and accuracy of your vocabulary.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The range and accuracy of your grammar.

The most common types of questions in IELTS Writing Task 2 are:

  • Opinion: You are asked to state your opinion on a given topic and provide reasons to support your opinion.
  • Discussion: You are asked to discuss both sides of a given issue and come to a conclusion.
  • Advantages/Disadvantages: You are asked to list the advantages and disadvantages of a given topic.
  • Direct Questions: You are asked to answer a direct question about a given topic.
  • Solutions: You are asked to propose solutions to a given problem.

Here are some tips for writing a good IELTS Writing Task 2 essay:
